When the Fire Arrives

Thinning alone, leaving slash on the ground, can make fire behavior worse by drying the stand and adding fine fuel; what works is thinning plus surface fuel treatment, in practice burning. The episode is the series' sober empirical test: what a crown fire needs, how treatment effects decay over ten to twenty years, how effectiveness collapses in extreme wind, and what a 2026 Science study of 285 fires found.

Still debated

Effectiveness under extreme fire weather is unresolved, since studies measure different things. The Science study's avoided-damage figure is not a net-carbon result, and much of the strongest evidence comes from California rather than the inland Northwest.
