The Discount That Isn't Big Enough

A fire-rated roof costs about $6,300, or $360 a year, yet California's rate filings grant an average discount of $31.38 a year. A 2026 state study found rebuilding homes in the Palisades and Eaton perimeters to a wildfire-prepared standard cuts modeled loss by 31 percent. The episode argues the small discount is correct, because the benefit is community-wide and much of it goes to neighbors, so the payoff cannot be delivered house by house.

Still debated

The 31 and 35 percent figures are community-wide model results, not what one retrofit buys one owner. Whether wildfire discounts will grow as wind credits did over two decades, or are capped by spillover to neighbors, is not yet known.
