Syphilis: The Shadow on the Land (1906–2026)

Syphilis exposes everything about American public health at once: its reach, its power, and its capacity for cruelty. The episode follows the early weapons, the coercive World War I American Plan, Surgeon General Thomas Parran's crusade, and the cure of penicillin, alongside the Tuskegee study and the Guatemala experiments. Today, congenital syphilis has risen roughly tenfold in a decade.

Still debated

Parran is both the hero of the 1938 control law and Surgeon General during the launch of Tuskegee and the Guatemala work. The PHS did not infect the Tuskegee men but withheld treatment, and the causes of the modern resurgence are debated.
