The River on Fire: The EPA and Its Brain

A country that watched a river burn built the Environmental Protection Agency and gave it a research office later called its heart and brain. The episode follows Silent Spring, the 1969 Cuyahoga fire, Earth Day and the 1970 founding, and the principle that regulation must rest on measurement. The research office was abolished in 2025.

Still debated

The 1969 Cuyahoga fire was modest, and the dramatic images came from a larger 1952 fire. Nixon founded the EPA yet vetoed the Clean Water Act, and historians dispute whether Silent Spring was the main cause of the movement or a symbol of forces in motion.
