Three million years ago volcanoes and colliding plates raised the Isthmus of Panama, rerouting ocean currents and opening a land bridge that was also a biological filter. The episode introduces the Cueva, Guna and Ngäbe-Buglé who lived there, whose gold and emeralds show the isthmus was a trade crossroads long before the canal.
Scientists still argue over when the isthmus closed: about 2.8-3 million years ago is the traditional date, while a 2015 study proposed 13-15 million years ago. The strength of its causal link to the Gulf Stream and Ice Ages is also debated.
