The Six Factors Behind the World Happiness Report, Explained

The six factors in the World Happiness Report do not decide the ranking; they explain it afterward, and most news stories get this backwards. The ranking comes only from ladder answers, while income, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption form a regression accounting for about three-quarters of differences. Dystopia is an invented benchmark, and the residual is what the model cannot explain.

Still debated

Critics question whether one survey item can carry national happiness and whether the ladder image nudges respondents toward wealth and status. Whether cultural response styles shift scores, and whether publishing the Dystopia chart fuels the belief that factors are the ranking, are also argued.
