The Smoke Line

A fire ignited near Timber Top in Big Sur in August 2026, on a ridge with almost no timber left to burn. Forty-nine years earlier the Marble Cone Fire burned the same mountains and sent smoke ninety miles north to Palo Alto. The opening episode sets the series' question: are stressed Western forests being permanently replaced by brush and grassland?

Still debated

Whether post-fire shifts from conifer and oak to chaparral and grass amount to permanent "conversion" or ordinary succession is an active scientific dispute. The 1977 choice of watershed over wilderness was also contested at the time.
