Gaza and Southern Lebanon: Does the Old Pattern Fit?

The series applies one test, covering consent, necessity, proportionality and return, to the hardest current case. As of mid-2026 nearly all of Gaza's roughly 2.1 million people have been displaced, many repeatedly, and southern Lebanon has seen razed border villages and new displacement. The episode sets Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention against Israel's stated case of lawful warnings and military necessity, attributing every claim to the body that made it.

Still debated

Whether Israel's actions amount to genocide or forcible transfer is contested: the UN Commission of Inquiry, Amnesty and Israeli rights groups say yes, while Israel categorically denies it. The ICJ has found the claim only plausible for provisional measures.
